Picea Project Description
Scale, structure, and seamless integration. The Sequoia Project was an opportunity to reshape an expansive property into a cohesive outdoor environment designed for both relaxation and entertaining. The result is a property that fully embraces its setting and is built to support years of outdoor living.
We were engaged to reimagine the hardscape layout after the initial concept did not fully align with the homeowner’s vision. With the locations of the second- storey deck, pool, and pool house already established, the challenge was to design around these fixed elements to create natural flow, purposeful separation, and strong visual balance across the yard.
Working alongside multiple trades throughout the build required careful coordination and flexibility. Our scope focused on the hardscape construction and preparation of the surrounding garden areas. Large-format interlock slabs were selected for the primary poolside patio, providing a clean, single-level surface that suits the scale of the home and transitions effortlessly between the pool house, hot tub, and sunken fire feature. To introduce warmth and define destination zones, wood-look porcelain pavers were incorporated within the pool deck. These required independent installation from the surrounding interlock to achieve the precision necessary for a smooth, durable finish.
A sunken fire pit and built-in bench create an intimate gathering area just off the pool’s edge. Integrated lighting beneath caps, along steps, and within the fire feature itself adds depth and atmosphere after sunset. Nearby, the hot tub area showcases in-paver lighting arranged in a subtle “starry night” pattern, enhancing the sense of retreat and privacy.
Movement throughout the yard was carefully considered. Armour stone lines the stairs leading into the yard, with mounted path lights providing both safety and ambient glow. At the base of the staircase, a raised landing beneath the second- storey deck offers shaded seating throughout the day — a comfortable vantage point adjacent to the pool without being directly exposed to the sun.
Despite the number of structural elements already in place, the finished landscape feels unified rather than constrained. Each hardscape zone supports the next, guiding movement while maintaining clear functional distinctions between lounging, dining, soaking, and gathering.
