Picea Project Description
Defined spaces, clean geometry, and room to gather. The Picea Project reimagines the area beyond the kitchen door, replacing an aging deck and stair system with a structured, contemporary landscape designed for connection and long-term enjoyment.
While the upper level required a full transformation, the existing lower patio was preserved and thoughtfully tied into the new work. Surface colours were carefully selected to complement the warm tones of the home while remaining sympathetic to the established interlock below, creating a transition that feels intentional.
Entertaining was central to the vision for this project. The homeowners regularly host family and friends and wanted multiple gathering areas that could comfortably accommodate their guests and existing patio furniture. From above, the design reads as strong rectangular forms. At ground level, those forms unfold into three distinct outdoor “rooms.”
A dining terrace sits just off the kitchen, framed with contrasting pavers to subtly define it as a destination. Nearby, a smaller patio currently functions as bar seating but was intentionally sized to allow for future flexibility – whether that becomes a shed, hot tub, or another feature down the road. Anchoring the yard is a custom-built fire feature and conversation area, scaled specifically for larger groups.
The fire feature was built custom to suit the proportions of the space, with a recessed bottom course of block that creates a subtle floating effect. Integrated lighting enhances the experience after sunset: in-paver lighting was used unconventionally along the bench back, under-cap illumination beneath the seat, and the soft glow at the base of the fire feature creates depth and atmosphere. Tread lighting improves safety in the stairs, while garden lighting highlights softscape features, allowing their foliage to reflect ambient light back into the space as it matures.
Material changes help distinguish each area. Contrasting paver styles and sizes guide movement through the space while reinforcing gathering zones. Vertical elements also incorporate accents to visually connect the hardscape palette and break up single-tone expanses. Wet-cast step treads and detailing introduce refined texture and durability underfoot.
Performance beneath the surface was equally important. All paved areas were constructed with permeable joints and a free-draining base to support responsible water management. Downspouts within the work area were tied into new underground drainage to move water efficiently away from the home.
Framing the structured hardscape, surrounding plantings soften edges while maintaining clean, rectangular bed lines that echo the geometry of the design. The result is balanced and cohesive, modern without feeling stark.
The Picea Project reflects thoughtful planning, custom detailing, and durable construction. It is an outdoor space built for hosting today and designed to evolve gracefully for years to come.
